Title

Game of Pulse

Problem Scenario

I want to see if playing video games increases heart rates and, as a result, burns calories.

Broad Question

Are video games good for you?

Specific Question

What are the impacts of video games on heart rate and calorie burning?

Hypothesis

If people play video games.
Then their heart rate will increase.
Because of the stress or excitement and they will burn calories.

Variables

Independent Variable:the game

Dependent Variable:pulse

Variables That Need To Be Controlled: everyone plays the same game for the same duration

Vocabulary List That Needs Explanation

heart rate: bpm is beats per minute

Detailed Procedure

I will take 4 people and test them on 2 different Xbox games. One Xbox game is done while sitting and pushing buttons. In this case I will use a car racing game. The other Xbox game is on Kennect and the people will have to physically move around. In this case I will use soccer.
Pulse rate per minute will be taken before playing a game and at the end of the game.

A standard formula helps you measure calories burned when your heart rate is between 90 and 150 beats per minute, or BPM. It is assumed that if the heart rate does not reach 90, the body does not burn calories.
In the Xbox Racing game when the person is sitting down, the heart rate increased but only reached 90 bpm in one case. The other times it was lower.
This means that although heart rate increased with everyone, it did not increase enough to burn calories.
In the Xbox Kennect Soccer game, heart rate increased in all people. It increased enough in all people tested to start to burn calories.

  • Plug your information into the standard formula for external image icon1.png burned. For females, the formula is (0.074 x age + 0.4472 x heart rate - 0.05741 x weight - 20.4022) x time / 4.184. For example if you are 20, weigh 140 pounds, had a heart rate of 120 and exercised for 30 minutes, your formula would be (.074 x 20 + 0.4472 x 120 - 0.05741 x 140 - 20.4022) x 30 / 4.184.
  • 5Calculate the calories burned for males with the equation (0.2017 x age + 0.6309 x heart rate - 0.09036 x weight -- 55.0969) x time / 4.184.

Abstract

My problem scenario was that certain video games are good for you because it increases your heart rate. Once your heart rate gets past the hundreds, you start to burn calories. My broad question was, Are video games good for you? My specific question was, What are the impacts of video games on heart rate and calorie burning? My hypothesis was if people play video games, then their heart rates will increase. Because of the stress or excitement and they will burn calories. I did my hypothesis graph. My variables were, independent variable; the game, dependent variable; pulse, and my controlled variable was every one plays the same game for the same duration. I took four people and tested them on two different Xbox games. One Xbox game was done while sitting and pushing buttons. In this case I used a car racing game. The other Xbox game is on Kennect and the people had to physically move around. In this case I used soccer. Pulse rate per minute was taken before playing a game and at the end of the game. I collected data and charted the data. I found that sitting down doesn't really do much, but it does raise your heart rate. The Kennect raised heart rates up enough to burn calories.
